Things to Know from ESM

As an EPC engineer, updating new technology is a must to find new ideas for engineering design.

Luckily, there is quite a lot online seminar or webinar nowadays.

On June 24, 2020, I had a chance to attend the Energy Storage Modules Webinar held by ABB Indonesia or known as PT. ABB Sakti Industri.

The speaker was Tae Sho Shiin from Project Management of Energy Storage, ABB Korea.

Meanwhile, the moderator was Astrid Damayanti, Marketing Communications Manager of Electrification from PT. ABB Sakti Industri.

The Energy Storage Module is A Big Power Bank

When the first time I heard the storage modules, my mind was thinking of battery in the UPS or Uninterruptible Power Supply.

However, after following the webinar, I understand that ESM has a different function from UPS.

UPS uses the battery to provide backup energy. However, ESM is some kind of power bank that is used to support the supply of the electrical network.

ESM is large scale in MW but UPS is small scale in kW.

ESM is connected with parallel but UPS is connected with series in the network.

When do we need to use ESM?

As we know that ESM is some kind of big power bank. We can use it to by charging it for one period of time and use it at another time.

In industry, the peak power is during day time. If the lack of power supply, the ESM can be used to increase power supply.

In the night time, the ESM can be charged back.

Lifetime of ESM

The lifetime depends on the design. The degradation of battery capacity is 1-2%/ year. Another factor that needs to consider is the cycle of operation.
